Mary Valley Station - a working cattle propertyAbout Mary Valley Station

Mary Valley Station is a working cattle property situated on the old telegraph line, which was opened on the 25th August 1887 joining Thursday Island to Brisbane and points in between by Morse code. The last Morse was sent on 24th June 1964. Some poles in original condition can still be viewed on Mary Valley.

The property is 151sq miles in area and has the Morehead River running through it. Mary Valley used to be part of Musgrave Station and was divided in the mid 1900’s among the children of the lease holders of the time, Fred and Mary Shepherd. Some of their family are still well known and respected graziers in the region.

The property is made up of timbered ridges, and tea tree flats with lagoons and swamps along the Morehead River.

Huge flying fox colony There is abundant bird and animal life including the Golden Shouldered parrot, now classified as an endangered species.

Mary Valley is also home to one of the largest colonies of the little red flying foxes in the Southern Hemisphere. These can be viewed daily at sunset as they spectacularly fill the sky as they set off on their nightly foraging.
